چکیده

THE elastic and mechanical properties of dentin were studied as early as 1895 by Black' who measured the compressive strengths of cubes of dentin and reported that a cube, 0.08 inch square, had an average compressive strength of 37,200 psi and an elastic deformation of 2.09 per cent when subjected to a load of 100 pounds (elastic modulus 0.8 x106 psi). Peyton, Mahler, and Hershenov2 reported average values of 23,400 psi, 36,100 psi, and 1.67 X106 psi for the proportional limit, compressive strength, and elastic modulus, respectively. Stanford, Paffenbarger, and Kumpula3 reported average values for these properties of 25,100 psi, 50,400 psi, and 4.1 x106 psi, respectively. Neumann and Di Salvo4 reported values from 1.1 to 1.7 X106 psi for the elastic modulus using large transverse sections of teeth. The values for the proportional limit and compressive strengths of dentin were in reasonable agreement, but those for the elastic modulus differed widely. The difficulties involved in handling small specimens of dentin and the problems connected with correcting the deformation used in the calculation of the elastic modulus values possibly account for the differences obtained in the various studies. It was felt that a critical re-evaluation of the technics and procedures used to obtain the elastic modulus, with particular emphasis on flow properties, would help to establish a better experimental value for the elastic modulus as well as the other physical properties of dentin.

Mechanical properties of human dentin

Human dentin exhibits a mechanical behavior like a functionally graded material with properties dependent on many physical and biological factors. This work describes and critically analyzes the methods to measure elastic moduli and damping and the corresponding results reported in literature. Furthermore, Mechanical Spectroscopy (MS) experiments have been carried out to determine with high pre...

Comparison of mechanical property and role between enamel and dentin in the human teeth

The mechanical properties of enamel and dentin were studied using test specimens having the same shape and dimensions because these properties might vary with the experimental conditions and specimen shapes and dimensions. Healthy human teeth were used as specimens for mechanical tests. The stress (MPa), strain (%), and elastic modulus (E, MPa) of the specimens were obtained from compression te...

Deformation Behavior of Human Dentin under Uniaxial Compression

Deformation behavior of a human dentin under compression including size and rate effects is studied. No difference between mechanical properties of crown and root dentin is found. It is mechanically isotropic high elastic and strong hard tissue, which demonstrates considerable plasticity and ability to suppress a crack growth. Mechanical properties of dentin depend on a shape of samples and a d...

Effect of sterilization by gamma radiation on nano-mechanical properties of teeth.

OBJECTIVES Extracted teeth used in dental research need to be considered infective and hence be sterilized without the materials' properties being altered. This study examined the effect of gamma radiation on the nano-mechanical properties of dentin and enamel of extracted human third molars. METHODS Whole teeth were sterilized using gamma radiation doses of 7 kGy and 35 kGy, respectively; te...

A New Method Combining Finite Element Analysis and Digital Image Correlation to Assess Macroscopic Mechanical Properties of Dentin

A literature review points out a large discrepancy in the results of the mechanical tests on dentin that can be explained by stress and strain assessment during the tests. Errors in these assessments during mechanical tests can lead to inaccurate estimation of the mechanical properties of the tested material. On top of that, using the beam theory to analyze the bending test for thick specimens ...
